Internet Retailer 2018 Focus Report: Omnichannel Fulfillment Isn’t Easy

While consumers’ fulfillment and delivery expectations are increasing, many leading e-retailers don’t offer a full menu of options, according to Internet Retailer’s 2018 Online Fulfillment & Delivery report, sponsored by Radial. In part, that’s because offering a range of omnichannel options isn’t easy or cheap.

Among the Internet Retailer 2018 Top 1000 e-retailers, just 57 fulfill online orders by shipping inventory directly from their stores. Much more common—but still not universal—are in-store pickup and returns of online orders.

Other key findings include:

  • 33% of merchants do not have a clear omnichannel strategy in place
  • Another 33% don’t have the right metrics in place to measure the effectiveness of their omnichannel strategy
  • 42% cite faster shipping as a top customer-facing fulfillment priority
