And these challenges accelerated in 2024. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-paragraph-block\">\n<p>Total returns for the retail industry amounted to $743 billion in merchandise in 2023, which prompted many retailers to implement new returns policies. Many retailers are experimenting with return charges. Others, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/amazon-returnless-resolutions-fba\/724601\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon,<\/a> now let customers keep items for a discounted refund as the price of reverse logistics skyrockets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-paragraph-block\">\n<p>Retailers know that efficient and hassle-free returns improve customer experience and satisfaction. Forty-three percent&nbsp;returned up to 5 orders. Of those, apparel, shoes, and accessories are returned more often than any other products, with 64% of consumers making returns in at least one of those categories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div purchase clothing and apparel items intending<em> <\/em>to return most of the order. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/return-policies-sway-purchasing-decisions-survey\/710951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Retail Dive<\/a> found that 87% of consumers purposefully order extra items to try on at home. They then return what they do not want. Retailers call this new trend \u201cbracketing.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-paragraph-block\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reverselogix.com\/industry-updates\/retail-bracketing-impacts\/#:~:text=It's%20called%20bracketing,say%20they%20bracket%20their%20buys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bracketing<\/a> is when a shopper buys multiple sizes, colors, or styles of a product with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radial.com\/eur\/insights\/the-rising-tide-of-fashion-e-commerce-returns\">intent to return<\/a> most of the purchased items. For retailers, this means that margin calculations, inventory management, and operations workflows become\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.retail-insight-network.com\/features\/bracketing-retail-strategies\/?cf-view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more unpredictable<\/a>. But consumers like bracketing. They avoid in-store fitting rooms and confusing online charts for the comfort of at-home fittings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-heading-block\" data-heading-level=\"2\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Returns Process Creates Frustrated Consumers&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-paragraph-block\">\n<p>Even when returns are planned, the process isn\u2019t always seamless. According to Radial\u2019s research, refund processing was the top complaint of consumers throughout the return process. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-paragraph-block\">\n<p>Twenty percent of consumers say they experienced long wait times for refund processing for online orders of clothing, apparel, or shoes. Another 13% of consumers experienced similarly long wait times for&nbsp;refunds on health and beauty orders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-paragraph-block\">\n<p>Packing items for return shipping was also a common issue, particularly for online apparel orders. Eighteen percent of consumers experienced issues with return packaging or labels and 16% struggled to find return instructions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-heading-block\" data-heading-level=\"3\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Return Issues Affect Brand Loyalty?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-paragraph-block\">\n<p>Negative return experiences affect brand loyalty\u2014but it may not always end retail relationships.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-paragraph-block\">\n<p>Nearly 30% of consumers would avoid shopping again with clothing or health and beauty brands after a poor returns experience. To avoid losing repeat customers, retailers should prioritize consumer feedback when improving their returns process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure Here\u2019s how retail leaders build strong return experiences to maintain customer relationships and build brand loyalty. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-heading-block\" data-heading-level=\"3\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offer an Omnichannel Returns Process&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"core-paragraph-block\">\n<p>Consumers want both online and in-store return options.
